Obituary for Mr. James R. Hayes

James R. Hayes passed away on March 2, 2010. He was 83 years of age. Jim had homes in Ormond Beach, Florida and Statesboro, Georgia.

Jim was born September 3, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Catholic University and graduated St. John’s University in 1951. He entered the FBI as a special agent in March 1952. He was a longtime police instructor and a hostage negotiator. In his career he participated in many major cases and received numerous commendations and awards.

Mr. Hayes retired from the FBI in 1977, after almost 26 years of service. He was stationed in the Statesboro FBI office in the late sixties, early seventies. He eventually retired from the Daytona Beach, Florida office in 1977.

After retirement he became the first Head of Security of a Fortune 500 Company, Figgie International headquartered in Willoughby, Ohio. After 15 years he again retired in 1992.

Jim divided his time between Statesboro and Ormond Beach. He was a founder and first Director of the Crime Stoppers program in Richmond, VA. , a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, a member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association, Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, and both St. Brendan’s and St. Matthew’s Parishes.

Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years Barbara, two brothers, six sisters and his six children Barbara Brown, Statesboro; James L. Hayes, Ormond Beach; Elaine Anderson, Lawrenceville, GA; Susan Gaines, Ormond Beach; Steven Hayes, Dacula, GA; Joyce Hayes, Washington, D.C.; and eleven grandchildren.

Services will be at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Statesboro, Georgia on Saturday, March 6 at 10 am.

There will be a visitation at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home, Statesboro, on Friday, March 5 from 5 to 8 pm.

Interment will be in the Eastside Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Matt Brown, Jim Hayes, Steve Hayes, Ryan Gaines, Jim Sojourner, Jack Hayes, Terry Hayes and Kirt McGlamery.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel and law enforcement personnel.

Memorial donations may be made to the Society of Former Agents of the FBI, Inc., Scholarship Fund 3717 Fettler Park Dr, Dumfries, VA 22025 or St. Matthew Parish Building Fund, 221 John Paul Ave, Statesboro, GA 30458.
