Obituary for Mr. Stanley Garland Yarber
Stanley Garland Yarber, born in Savannah, Georgia on August 1, 1925, died Sunday, March 1, 2010, after a long battle with cancer, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. He was the son of William Albert and Nora Stephens Yarber. He grew up on Gerrard Avenue in a community called Wildwood and was a member of Wildwood Methodist Church. He attended Savannah public school, graduating from Savannah High School. While in Savannah schools, his interest was music. He sang in the high school voice class, participated in many musical projects, sang on a radio program on WTOC radio station on Monday evenings and sang in the choir at Epworth Methodist Church. He worked afternoons after school at JC Penny Company.
From September 1943 to February 1945 he was in the US Army Air Corp Training Command. He was an instructor in RADAR technology and maintenance.
He attended Armstrong Junior College, Georgia Tech and received a BBA degree from Georgia College of Business Administration, (Atlanta), and now Georgia State University. In 2006 he was inducted into the Golden Panther Club, an alumni club of graduates of fifty years.
Stanley was employed by AT&T Company from September 1946 until October 1988, 42 years. During that time he worked in Savannah, GA, Augusta, GA, Atlanta, GA, Cincinnati, Ohio, White Plains, NY, Manhattan, NY, and Bedminster, Piscataway, and Somerset, NJ. While working for AT&T, he was involved in cutting edge communication technology. The computerization of the engineering department’s engineering functions, the planning, designing, implantation of computer applications to support the 800 services on the AT&T Network, were two major projects he managed. In 1977 Stanley was awarded the Engineering Vice President’s Award for his efforts in planning, designing, and implementing computer application to support the new technologies and service featured in the 800 services. Throughout the 1980 he was recognized for lesser awards.
While living in Yorktown Heights, NY, Stanley participated in the Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corp as an EMT and held various offices including Corp President, when the Corp built its first permanent headquarters. In 1979, he was awarded the Ten Year Lifetime Membership in appreciation for devoted service.
On October 1, 1988, Stanley retired as an engineering district manager. He and Virginia relocated to Statesboro, GA from Somerville, NJ. Since his retirement, Stanley has been active in the Fist Presbyterian Church, The Kiwanis Club of Statesboro, the Statesboro Amateur Radio Club and volunteered at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.
Stan was an avid golfer, and when he and Virginia were not playing golf, they loved to travel. They have traveled in 49 states and 22 countries. Reading and writing were his avocation. He has written a book on his ancestry and many papers on history, theology, investments, radio transmission and electronics. He held an Extra Class Radio Amateur License, W4HXW.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Clyde Yarber, his sister, Myrtle Yarber Jones, his son, Stanley Garland Yarber, Jr., and his nephew, Keith Yarber.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia Clark Yarber, his son, John Albert Yarber, of Statesboro, his daughter, Virginia Yarber Worsfold, of Fort Mill, SC, his sister, Mary Yarber Rotureau, of Savannah, five grandchildren, Diana Yarber Cochran, of Seffner, FL, Lt. Christina Yarber, of Fort Hood, TX, Laura Fountain, Statesboro, Richard Worsfold, of Seattle, WA, and Eric Worsfold, of Fort Mill, SC, five great grandchildren, Jacob, Jonathan, and Justin Cochran, of Seffner, FL, and Melina and Briana Fountain, of Statesboro, a nephew, Wain Yarber and niece, Marci Bunkley.
Pallbearers will be Wain Yarber, Garrett Yarber, George Rotureau, Richard Worsfold, William Russell, Alton Odom, Leon Bunkley, and Rick Felix.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro, the Statesboro Amateur Radio Club, the Fielding Russell Sunday School Class, and the Men’s 2X4 Bible Study Group of First Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5:00-7:00PM at the Joiner Anderson Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held March 4, 2010 at 3:30PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Statesboro, with Rev. Dan Lewis officiating. Mr. Yarber will lie in state an hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
