Mrs. Betty Jean Newton
November 9, 1939 - March 19, 2022
Betty Jean Newton, 82 of Sylvania passed early Saturday morning, March 19, 2022 at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center. She was a woman of strong faith and instilled the value of depending on God for everything to her children and grands. She was a devoted member of McBride Church and valued the knowledge and peace that came from being in her pew every Sunday morning soaking in God’s word. She was a sweet soul that possessed a tremendous amount of strength, compassion, and integrity that will be her legacy for all who knew her and had the privilege of being related to her. She was blessed with two families. One she created with her first husband Charles Cannon. The second she joyfully inherited with her second husband Billy Newton. She was also blessed with several siblings who loved and respected her and a best friend, Lunette Whitehead, who was like another sister to her. She enjoyed simple pleasures like sunsets on the beach and wind chimes dancing in the breeze. In lieu of flowers, feel free to donate a wind chime to your favorite organization to be enjoyed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Charles Cannon, second husband, George William “Billy" Newton, siblings, Herman McMillan, William McMillan, Gerald McMillan, Hubert McMillan, Roger McMillan, and Waldene McMillan, and a son-in-law, Gary Brinson. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy C. Brinson; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles “Chuck” A. and Julie Cannon, all of Sylvania, and David T. and Kathy Cannon of Macon; step-daughter and husband, Cindy N. and Stephen Parker; step-sons and wife, Tommy and Kristi Newton, all of Sylvania, and Ray Newton of Beaufort; 20 grandchildren; 23 great- grandchildren; sisters, Carolyn M. Potter, Irene M. Sutton, and Rita M. Lewis, brother, James McMillan, all of Sylvania; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Monday, March 21, 2022 at 11:00am in the Screven Chapel of Joiner Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Karen Zeigler officiating and assisted by Rev. Travis Smith. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Screven Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
