Mrs. Patricia Smith Lord of Sylvania, Georgia, died of a stroke on Monday, December 28, 2020 at age 86. Her kindness and ready smile will be missed by everyone who knew her. Mrs. Lord was a perpetual student, always reading and asking questions. At the same time, she was a devoted teacher, finding creative ways to share her enthusiasm. As a fifth grade teacher, she kindly and unswervingly expected character and learning from her students, who, in her years of retirement, continued often to speak to her with appreciation. She shared her love of history with her fellow members of the DAR, where she served several terms as regent of the Brier Creek Chapter. Devoted to her faith, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sylvania, where she served as Sunday School teacher to many age levels, but most recently to her dear class of Senior Ladies. Born in 1934 in Athens, Georgia, to Vernon and Huldah Smith (subsequently Huldah Mingledorff), she spent many happy childhood days in Sylvania, often with her beloved grandfather, Dr. John C. Cail. She graduated from the Baldwin School in Pennsylvania and obtained her teaching degree at the University of Georgia. She was married to John R. Frankhouser until his passing in 1962. She later married William C. Lord, Sr., with whom she celebrated her 55th wedding anniversary on December 26th . Whole-hearted to a fault, she demonstrated her steadfast and compassionate nature most plainly in the way she loved her children. She was predeceased by her two younger children, William C. Lord, Jr., and Patricia Christie Lord. She is survived by her husband; two children, John (Claudia) Frankhouser, and Michele (Bill) Frankhouser Hutchings; eight grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Jack Frankhouser, Murphy Frankhouser, Emily Hutchings, Madeline Christie Hutchings, David Hutchings, Drew Hutchings, and Cail Lord-Siler; three great-grandchildren; her two sisters, Jerry Gentry and Huldah Carlton; and many nieces and nephews. In consideration of safety concerns regarding coronavirus, a private family burial with Rev. Dorsia Atkinson officiating was held December 31, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Screven County Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in a few months, the date and time to be announced. Remembrances may be made to First United Methodist Church of Sylvania, P.O. Box 258, Sylvania, Georgia 30467.
