    Mr. Walter R. Tillman

    July 27, 1932 - November 4, 2021

    Walter Richard Tillman, Jr., 89, of Sylvania, and formerly of Jacksonville, FL, passed Thursday evening, November 4, 2021. He was born to the late Walter Richard, Sr. and Lelia Herrin Tillman in Cogdell, GA. He was a US Army veteran and had been employed with H.E.S. and contracted through A&P, O'Neal Steel for 25 years, his family's cabinet shop until its closure, and lastly retiring at the age of 80 with Penske as a Hiker. He was revered for his strong work ethic and was never one to remain idle, traits passed to his children. He was an avid outdoorsman and had a great love for the water, whether at the river, ocean, or in his latter years his pool, he was always at ease there. He enjoyed fishing and taken the family on weekend beach camping trips on the islands off Florida in their youths. In 2019, he relocated to Screven County to be closer to his daughter and grands. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Tillman; the mother of his children, Eunice R Haymans; sons, Leo Haymans and Rick Haymans; sisters, Eula Mae Lott, Christine Keene, Aline Strickland, and brothers, Leonard Tillman, Rufus Tillman. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lelia (Sam) Sommers of Sylvania, GA, grandchildren; Christopher (Joyce) Sommers of Sylvania, Bayne Evans of Soperton, and Brandon Sommers of Rocky Ford, and four great-grandchildren. A private family service will be held at a later date.
